WhatIsThatFile.com provide a huge database which contains a lot of unknown files name and their potential to destroy your PC. You can always check any suspicious file with them.

I still remember a few years ago, i just need an antivirus to protect my computer. I even don’t need antispyware to protect my computer. But now 1 antivirus is not enough. You probably need 2 antivirus and 1 antispyware at the same time. It is because there are too many virus/spyware come out everyday and a lot of people are trying to change the code to become a new virus! Sometimes, we need to search through Google for unknown files.

Today, i found this article, which introduce WhatIsThatFile.com. This is a service which collect around 3000++ unknown filenames. If you suspect a file, you can always type the filename and WhatIsTheFile will search through the database and list the result for you. The first screen shot show that the file (csrss) is clean while the second screenshot show that the file (trojan) may contains virus/spyware.

The interesting features are you can actually look at the file description and you can edit them! It means that of you found someone gave the wrong information, you can either edit the information or report that as spam. Furthermore, if you found a virus/spyware but that file hasn’t listed, you can add the file yourself, but they will make final decision to list your file or not.

I personally think that this is a good feature, as long as they can control spamming and check regularly. I hope that more people will contribute to build up a strong and huge database so that we can easily find out the suspicious files. Perhaps they can get support from antivirus or antispyware companies.
