RunMe- Portable application launcher for Windows

I cover XWindows Dock yesterday, and i would like to introduce another portable application which performs similar task. It is called RunMe. The application was being published quite some time ago, but i just discovered it today, and i decide to write about it, since it is really worth us to have a look.

To some of the users, RunMe may be a simple utilities to launch their favorite application. But for advanced users, RunMe may become a replacement tool for their Windows Start Menu(you can configure this through the Settings option).

Users can add any program to the launcher by dragging and dropping the shortcut into it. There are a lot of settings that you can change. for example, you can change the look of RunMe from the preinstalled 15 themes, the dock position of the launcher, the effects, and much more.

RunMe is a portable application, which mean you can always carry it with your USB pendrive. All settings are saved in a XML file. If you like an application launcher with docking support, make sure you look into this application!

Note: This application support Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 as well.

One of the attractive feature that Mac OS gives us is the docking feature. Windows users can have such features by installing 3rd party software, which emulate the docking feature.

Although there are a lot of docking applications for windows, but XWindows Dock beat them all by having an excellent graphical effects such as reflections, transparencies, shadow and blur in a single package.

Although we don’t know when is the actual release date of Windows 7, but there are some Windows 7 wallpapaers around the internet. Some of them are taken from the leak version, while some are made by designers around us.

Stickies For Windows – Put yellow sticky notes on Windows

Stickies for windows is a free application which can put yellow sticky notes on your Windows system, much like Mac OS application.

Sticky note is pretty important. It serve as a reminder for our daily plans. There are a lot of similar applications and some of them are paid applications.

Although Stickies for windows is a free application, it comes with an easy-to-use interface and very customizeable.

The above screenshot showed how you can customize the notes. You can even choose your own system tray icon and synchronize your notes at different PCs through Amazon S3 service.

Once you installed Stickies, you can create new notes by press “Ctrl + Alt + N” and place them anywhere at your desktop.

Desktops – New virtual desktop manager from Microsoft

Desktops is another application for users who like to have multiple virtual desktops. It is similar with Virtual Desktop Manager, but with some advantages.

Virtual desktops utility will showing the currently active window, while hiding those inactive windows. Application windows are bound to their own virtual desktops so that Windows know which application to show when you switch to different virtual desktops.

Lets talk about advantages of this new application over Virtual Desktop Manager. First of all, its size is smaller and it is a portable application. So, we can easily bring it along with our USB flash drive. Second, users can set different hotkey sets, in case the default one is used by other application.

WinRoll – Make a window roll into its title bar

Sometimes, when you open a lot of windows, you may find that it is veru difficult to maintain them. With WinRoll, you can minimize some of the windows into their title bar. This make users easier to focus on current window, while still can see the other unused window floating at the desktop.

There are some other usages on WinRoll:

  • Middle click the minimize button will minimize the window to tray icon.
  • Shift + left click the title bar send the window to the back.
  • Middle click the close button will toggle the “on top” of the window.
  • Middle click the title bar will turn on/off the “transparency”.

This application is written in assembly language, so the performance is very good, with size below 100KB.

Instantly logoff, reboot and shut down your computer through tray icon

iPower is a utilities which will add a tray icon and let users to instantly logoff, reboot and shut down computer by double click it.

Since i installed Windows Vista, i feel that i don’t really like the Vista Lock buttons feature. I always hope that i can replace the lock and save session button with reboot and shutdown button. As i feel that i seldom lock my computer or save the session.

Finally i found iPower, which add a tray icon so that i can quickly shutdown or reboot my PC (although i have another application which can shutdown my PC within few seconds, but this utilities allow Windows to gives any warning for unsaved application.)

iPower is a portable application. Upon launch, you may right-click the tray icon to choose either “Logoff, reboot or shutdown”. The default is “Shut down”. When you double click the tray icon, magic happen. Your computer will immediately logoff, reboot or shut down depands on what you choose.

I like to restart my PC from times to times, so i had set the double-click to “Reboot”. What about you?

CloseWin: Close multiple selected windows at one time

CloseWin is a portable application which can immediately close multiple windows in the taskbar at one time.

If you like to open a lot of windows at the same time. You probably need to spend some time to close them after use, so that you won’t accidentally close the wrong window. So, why not use CloseWin to help you close the unused windows?

You will need to add some text to the list, so that CloseWin can close all windows that contain the text in the title. For example, i had added “Skype” to the list. When i click “Close selected windows“, CloseWin will close all opened windows which contains “Skype” in the title. Remember, the text is case-sensitive!

You can add different text to the list, and then click “Close all windows in list” so that you can close multiple selected windows simultaneously.The last options – “Close All Windows”, will close all windows in taskbar.

Note: There are some applications which can’t be closed by CloseWin, but most of the applications work fine.

How to enable thumbnail preview for each task in Windows XP taskbar

Thumbnail preview image is a new feature in Windows Vista. But, Windows XP users also can enjoy this feature by installing Visual Task Tips.

Since i switch to Windows Vista, i really like the thumbnail preview feature. Today, i found an interesting application which can enable this feature in Windows XP. It is a freeware (non-commercial usage).

Visual Task Tips is a lightweight shell enhancement utility. Upon install the application, you can start enjoying the thumbnail preview when your mouse hover to any applications in Windows taskbar. The screenshot above shows preview for “My Computer“.

There are some settings that you can done. For example, you can change the thumbnail size and popup delay. You can also change the refresh rate, but higher refresh rate will cause performance issue.

Can i start this application automatically when i launch Windows? Yes, you can start it automatically. Just check “start application automatically when windows start”. Furthermore, you can also start the application without tray icon. For more information, you may visit the FAQ page.

How to show folder size in Windows explorer

Windows explorer is the most common application that we use daily. We can customize the display so that it can show the file details and also it size. Unfortunately, it is unable to show us folder size. Foldersize is a plugin for Windows explorer so that it can show us the size of files and folders in the same column.

After install foldersize, you can right-click on the header and choose “folder size“. You will then get a new column to display the size of files and folders on that particular path. the red box shown new added column which display the size of files and folders. You can then uncheck the original “size” header, as foldersize will show you the size of files also.

Foldersize is a freeware and it support both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. Unfortunately, Vista users are unable to install this application.
