Extract any icons from files easily with IconExtract

IconExtract is able to extract any icons/cursors from files. It is able to scan and extract icons from exe, dll, ocx, and cpl file types.

What will you do when you saw an interesting icon or cursor from a file? You probably want to grab the image, but how to grab it?

This free utilities from nirsoft.net will helps you to scan and extract any icon or cursor from the given file. Simply launch the application, drag and drop the file to it, and the application will scans and shows you the icons and cursors in the files.

You may right-click and choose to save the icon to a file (.ico format), or you may select copy to clipboard. After copy to your clipboard, you may use your favorite image editor software to edit and save in your desired format.

This is a portable application. So you can always bring it along with your USB flash drive.

How to modify 7zip file extension’s icon

7-zip is a popular free zip tool for us. Unfortunately, the icons are pretty dull for me. So, i decide to patch them with more interesting icons.

Before you start, you need to know the path to 7zip. Normally, it is “C:\Program Files\7-Zip”. After that, you need an application called “Resource Hacker”, which is free. You can download Reosurce Hacker from here. After you prepare everything, lets start to modify the icons.

Steps 1

Open Resource Hacker. Click File -> Open. Browse to your 7zip folder. Mine is “C:\Program Files\7-Zip”. After that, choose “7z.dll” and click Open.

Step 2

Expand the Icon Group. You will get around 16 nodes.

Step 3

Expand the first node (0). Click “1033″. You will see the 7zip icon appear. Right click “1033″ and choose “Replace Resource“.

Step 4

Click “Open file with new icon” to select your icon file.

Step 5

After that, You can select icon to replace from the right listbox. Press “Replace” when done. Repeat this step to change the other icons.

How to change icons for any filetypes or folders

IconX is a free application which let users to change any filetypes or folders icon. It is integrated into the context menu.

To change an icon for any filetypes, simply right click it and choose “Change Icon…” and IconX will popup. You can select icons from your system (shell32.dll), import from icon files (.ico), or from icon library files (.icl).

After you select a new icon, remember to check “Use icon for all files of that type” so that you can change the icon globally for same file type.

This is a free application, but installation is a bit complicated. After you download, simply unzip all files to a temporary directory. After that, right click iconx.inf and choose install.

When you first time launch IconX, remember to click the IconX menu and choose “register”. The username and password are provided in the readme file.

Grab free RSS icon set from Smashing Magazine!

Dirceu Veiga had released a free RSS icon set which contains 8 icons in different format for Smashing Magazine readers.

These icons are free to use for both private and commercial use and are available is various resolutions: 16×16px, 24×24px, 32×32px, 48×48px, 128×128px, 256×256px and 512×512px.

You can download the icon set in different format: PNG, Windows icons, and Mac icons.

So, which RSS icon you prefer? I prefer the first one, which is a man reading the newspaper. Hurry up, change your RSS icon to attract people to subscribe your RSS feed!

Vista Drive Icon – Turn XP drive icon into Vista style!

Vista Drive Icon is an application which can changes the drive icon shown in My Computer, to a nearly Vista style drive icon, which can show the free space of a particular drive, with a smooth colored horizontal bar.

By default, Windows XP will not show the free space of your drive, unless you change the view to Details. But, Windows Vista did show us the free space. Now, Windows XP user also can get this feature by using this application.

The screenshots above show us the drive icon of my C: drive before and after the installation. The tiny horizontal bar show us the particular drive’s free space. When your drive is running on low disk space, the bar’s color will turn red as shown on the screenshot below:

Another insteresting feature is that a small Windows icon will appear on the drive that contains your windows system.

This application can be installed on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP. I am not sure that will it compatible with Windows Vista or not, but i believe no one will install on Vista, right? The memory usage is quite low and i try to install it on my old PC, it seems like running smoothly.
