How to make all open windows automatically align

Posted by Lim on Apr 26th, 08 | Filed under Application, Cool Stuff, How To | No Comments

If you open more than 1 window and want to align them so that you can see all the windows at one time, you may try allSnap, which will help you to align windows (like what happen in Winamp or Photoshop).

After you install the application, all windows will snap to each other while you moving/resizing them. If you want to temporary turn off the snapping, you can press and hold the toggle key while you moving/resizing the windows (default :Alt key).

This program will not work if your application has its own custom moving/resize behavior. Below is a demonstration on how to use allSnap.

Create a totally hidden folder on your desktop

Posted by Lim on Mar 26th, 08 | Filed under Cool Stuff, Tips, Tutorial | 5 Comments

This tutorial will discuss how to create a “hidden” folder with a blank name and no icon, so that nobody will know the existence of that folder.

There are a lot of methods to make your folder invisible. The easiest way is to set the property “hidden” to true. Else, you can get some softwares to do it for you. Now, i would like to discuss another method.

Step 1

Right click on anywhere and choose New -> Folder.

Step 2

Rename the folder. When you rename, delete the original name, hold your “alt” key and press “0160“. This will create a blank name for your folder.

Step 3

After that, right click on your folder and choose Properties. Choose Customize and then press Change Icon button. Select a blank icon from the list. Now, you had successfully create a hidden folder.

People will not know the existence of the folder, even they set to view invisible folder. This is because your folder has no icon and no name!

My advise

Try to put the hidden folder at the middle of your desktop, so that no one will accidentally select them. To make your folder more secure, you can check the “hidden” property.

ControlC – Save your clipboard text online automatically

Posted by Lim on Feb 8th, 08 | Filed under Application, Cool Stuff | No Comments

ControlC is an application which will monitor your clipboard and automatically uploaded any copied text and links to the server. The copied text and link can then be retrieved when you login to your account.

ControlC With ControlC, you can actually store your copied text or links in the server and you can access them from any computers. By default, windows will only save the last copied item. So, you need to paste them to some text file before copy new item. It is very troublesome especially when we found something interesting in an article and we want to save some text from it.

Let’s try ControlC and see how it works? Before you start using it, you need to create an account which is free (Use ‘beta4040′ as your invitation code). After you create your account, you can proceed to download the desktop client, which is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. After you install the desktop client, you can then log-in with your email and password. When you copy any text or links, the desktop client will automatically upload it to the server. Below is the screenshot showing the copied text from my desktop:

ControlC profile

The uploaded text is encrypt to protect your data completely, but you can choose to unencrypt it so that public can access them. Oh ya, you have options to make some of them private while the others are public.

G.ho.st is a free web-based Operating System, a virtual computer that can be accessed by anywhere using a web browser. It provide every user a Virtual Computer (VC) which will include the personal settings, desktop, files, and even applications.

G.ho.st Similar with Joose, G.ho.st is an online desktop with an operating system and a virtual environment to store your personal settings. They provide up to 3GB storage for files and 3GB for G.ho.st mail. You can access your virtual desktop anywhere as long as you have internet access and a web browser.

G.ho.st hosted a lot of applications and services, which can run immediately without installation. Most of the applications are online services which are also free. You can view the complete applications list here. User can create a single-sign in for services which use frequently, such as Google Docs. They provide a ftp fr each user so that they can download/upload anything easier. For browsing and email, G.ho.st comes with its own browser and email client which has a pretty interface. The screenshot below shows G.ho.st browser application:

G.ho.st browser

G.ho.st is still in public alpha and it takes long time to load the application. But, its interface really attract me. Although it provide a lot of applications and services, but it is too few compare with desktop applications. I hope that they can try to integrate as many as online applications in future.

Civil Netizen let you deliver your file privately to others. The file transfer is fast and easy, using the built-in download manager.

Civil NetizenThere are lots of online private file sharing. I had cover some of them, including Adobe SHARE, EatLime, and PipeBytes. PipeBytes is a service which just provide a platform for user to send file through their website but they won’t store the file in their server. But, what happen if you want to share file with your friends but lazy to go through long steps or you want the download process can be resume if your internet connection get interrupted? I believe PipeBytes can’t give us these 2 features.

Civil Netizen is another file sharing tool which provide a lot of features, including a built-in download manager which can resume the download process after the internet being interrupted. Furthermore, the traffic between senders and recipients are being encrypt using 128-bit encryption. Civil Netizen support up to 4GB for total size and also preserves the folder structure.

How it works?

So, how Civil Netizen works? There are totally 4 steps involved, 2 for senders, 2 for recipients.

  1. Pack – Drag-and-drop files that you would like to share, and give your parsel a name. You can add multiple files or folders and the folder structures will be kept.
  2. Send – After you can create your parsel, you can start sending them to your friends by giving them the pickup slip. There are few options that you can choose from, either use your primary desktop email client or through IM.
  3. Pickup – When your friends get the pickup slip, they can start picking up your files by pasting the pickup slip text.
  4. Unpack – After your friends finish download the files, they can then unpack the parsel and browse the parsel’s contents.
