How to “hide” your HDD partition from others

If you are sharing PC with your family and you would like to “hide” some informations from them, this trick would work for you, without any software installed.

Sometimes, we save some data in our computer, but we don’t want others to view them. We may try come encryption software, but it is very difficult to configure and sometimes we may lost the password also! So, i would like to share a trick with my readers, it actually hide these partitions from My Computer, and DOS.

Step 1

Right click on My Computer and choose Manage. Note: this tutorial is based on Windows XP, but applied to Vista also, with some different settings.

The Computer Management will prompt out. Choose Disk Management which is under Storage. After that, all available partition will appear. Choose the partition which you want to hide, right click and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.

I had chosen J: for this example. Click the Remove button and then OK to hide it.

As you can see, J: has been removed from My Computer. You can’t even access it from DOS!

How to recover the “hidden” partition?

Let say now you want to recover the “hidden” partition. Follow step 1 and step 2 to choose the partition, then choose Add and then select the drive letter. I had selected J, as the previous drive letter is J.

Conclusion

This is a very simple trick to hide the partition. people can always recover the hidden partitions, unless the don’t realize the existence of the partitions. So, if you want to keep some secret, please install some applications which can lock the partitions or folders.
