How to create a list of all files and folders under a path

Sometimes, you may want to create a list of files/folders under a certain path, but you need some DOS skills in order to do so. If you don’t want to type those commands, you can try a free tool JR Directory Printer, which will help you to create a text files that contains list of files and folders under a path.

There are a lot of options for you to choose from. Screenshots below show the General and Display settings:

As you can see, the General page allow you to choose your folder path, recurse sub-directories or not, lowercase and dos style filename. If you choose recurse sub-directories, you will get a very long list. The Display tab will let you choose to display the properties of the file, such as size, date time, and attributes.

This application is very useful especially when you want to create a list for your mp3 or movies. You can create a list for your files/folders before burn them into CD/DVD so that you can easily know the contents of the files at future, without browsing them.

LinkBlip – Inform you if someone visit your link

LinkBlip is a service which let you monitor an URL. If someone visit the link, you will receive a notification email.

Both LinkBlip and SpyPig work in similar way. SpyPig will send you a notification when people open your email while LinkBlip will notify you when people visit your link.

Sometimes, you create a birthday E-card for your friend and you want to track whether they open it or not, then you may try this service. Simply provide your email address and URL that you want to keep an eye on. LinkBlip will then generate a short URL for you. Send your friend this URL. When they open it, you will receive a notification email.

LinkBlip will also show you the recepient’s city and state. The main advantage of this service is its simplicity and easy to use. You can also use LinkBlip as a URL redirection service.

Read it Later – Save interest pages and read later

Read it Later is a Firefox extension which can bookmark any URL so that you can read them later.

We receive a lot of information everyday. Sometimes, we don’t have much time to really go through all of them. We may choose to save them into our bookmarks folder and read them while we free. But, do you really go back to those articles when you are free? No, because sometimes you can’t differentiate between articles that you had read and not yet read. So, there is a service called InstaPaper, which will can categorize your articles to read and unread, so that you can go back to those unread article in future.

Read it Later is a similar service, but it save the page inside your own computer. After install the extension, you will see 2 new buttons at the toolbar.

When you found any article that you want to keep, press the left button and Firefox will save them to your bookmarks. When you are free, press the right button and Firefox will pick the unread article from your bookmarks. After you had read the article, Firefox will automatically remove them from your bookmarks folder.

There are a lot of options that you can play around, such as bookmark the unread article to online bookmarking services. There is an experimental feature, where you can save your article for offline viewing. However, this feature is not fully implemented yet and error may occur while you save pages for offline viewing.

PixelCryptor – Encrypt anything with an image

PixelCryptor is a free application which can encrypt any files by using an image. You need the same image to decrypt the package.

I had cover a tutorial before, which teach you how to hide a text file in an image. Now, this powerful application can encrypt anyting by using an image file, and export the result as a single package file (.cgp). You need the same image in order to decrypt the package.

The application’s interface is very simple. To encrypt files, choose Encode Files -> add files -> choose an image as your encryption key -> choose the encrypted package name. To decrypt, follow the similar steps by choosing Decode Files.

This application is very suitable for users who want to encrypt files with fast and easy. Compare to other professional encryption software like Truecrypt, i think this PixelCrypt is more suitable for computer novice as it doesn’t have much settings.

Use Web based Stumbleupon toolbar to discover new sites

Stumbleupon is a great service because it let users to discover new sites and rate/review them. Now, this trick will let user use the Stumbleupon toolbar without install it.

Firefox and Internet Explorer users can enjoy the Stumble because they can easily install the extension/plugin toolbar. But, users of other browser such as Opera and Safari can’t enjoy this because there is no Stumbleupon toolbar for them!

Now, thanks to Digital Inspiration, he discover a way to use Stumbleupon toolbar without installing it. And this trick works for all browser! All you have to do is enter http://www.stumbleupon.com/demo/#url=http://www.techsnack.net/ to your address bar and hit enter. You can replace the www.techsnack.net with any URL.

This toolbar look like the original Stumbleupon toolbar. Although it has the full list of buttons, but you can’t vote for the website or submit to another friends. What you can do is just click the Stumble! button and it bring you to another new site.

This works great for non-supported browser such as Opera and Safari. For Firefox or IE users, you can try this if you don’t want to install to much plugin to your toolbar.

2 online zip file services which you may need

Mail My zip and zip online are 2 free service which can compress up to 5 files at once and then forward the result zip file to any email or download to your own computer.

I had introduced Wobzip, an online service which can uncompress zip file and now i would like to introduce 2 services which can create zip file online. You may need them when you are using other computer which doesn’t install any zip application. Although Windows XP can create zip file easily, but other OS users may need to install zip application in order to create/open zip file.

Both Mail My Zip and Zip Online allow user to compress 5 files at once and you can choose either to send the zip file to email or not. No registration required to use this service, but you must enter the security code before you continue.

The main difference between these 2 services is the maximum single file size supported by them. Mail My Zip allow 2MB per file while Zip Online only allow 650kb per file.
